Largest cities of the world

6 January 2007: The tables rank cities with the largest land area and their surrounding urban areas by population. (The world's largest, irrespective of land area, cities and urban areas are ranked in the section urban) Most such agglomerations are economically, socially and culturally dominated by one city at their centre. Occasionally however, several cities of similar status and their suburbs make up an urban area.
